Getting to Belém at a glance

Four public options reach the district: tram 15E, bus 728, bus 714 and the CP train on the Cascais line. The train has the clearest timing. A scheduled example train leaves Cais do Sodré at 5:30 a.m. and reaches Belém at 5:38 a.m., which is 8 minutes. The tram passes the main sights on its way. No page can promise a fixed travel time for the tram or the bus, because traffic and waiting time vary.

Not every train stops at every station on the line, so check the timetable for the train you want. The weekday timetable has been valid since 6 April 2026, and the weekend timetable since 28 September 2026. The weekend version includes replacement buses and special night trains on some dates. For the airport transfer and Lisbon in general, see the airport to city centre guide.

A tram ticket paid on board and a pre-loaded single ticket are different products, so the fares are not the same. A 24-hour CARRIS/Metro ticket costs €7.25, and €11.40 if it includes the CP train. Zapping credit in the CARRIS network is priced at €1.72 per ride. CP has its own zapping price of €2.05, which does not apply on CARRIS. For the train, the fare depends on the zones you cross, so buy at the machine and check the price shown.

Which way is best for you

A short guide by situation.

Fast and simple: the train

Take the CP Cascais line from Cais do Sodré to Belém. Check that your train stops at Belém, as not every service does.

On the way: tram 15E

The tram runs from Praça da Figueira past Cais do Sodré and then along the river to Belém. Its stops include Altinho for MAAT, the Coach Museum, Jerónimos Monastery and the Centro Cultural Belém. If you want to see the district from the street, this is the line.

Straight to the monastery: bus 728

The bus stops at Jerónimos Monastery and at the Belém river station. In the city it serves Cais do Sodré and Praça do Comércio.

For the museums: bus 714

Bus 714 links Cais do Sodré with Altinho for MAAT, Belém for the Coach Museum and the monastery. It is a good fit if you plan a museum day.

Lisboa Card, parking and service changes

What to check before you leave.

Lisboa Card

The card covers metro, CARRIS buses and trams, and trains towards Cascais, Sintra and Setúbal, so it includes the Belém train. It comes as a 24, 48 or 72-hour card. Adult prices start at €31 for 24 hours and €62 for 72 hours in 2026. The tower and the monastery are on the free list but need a booked date and time with your card number. See the Lisboa Card guide for the city view.

Tower tickets →

Parking

Do not count on free parking near the tower. The Coach Museum has a visitor car park on Avenida da Índia, with 4 spaces for visitors with special needs, and no tariff is posted on its visitor page. MAAT points visitors to a free public car park about 500 m away. Read the posted tariff on any street before you leave the car.

Service changes

Night shuttles, shortened tram runs and replacement buses happen on some dates. Check the current CARRIS and CP notices on the day, especially for evening and weekend trips.

Tickets and cards

The reloadable travel card and the fare loaded onto it are two different things. The prices above are for the fares. Ask at the machine what the card itself costs when you buy one.
