Pastéis de Belém at a glance
Pastéis de Belém is a bakery on Rua de Belém, in the same quarter as the Jerónimos Monastery and the Torre de Belém. The bakery dates the start of its production to 1837. The bakery traces its recipe back to the monastery next door. That is the bakery's own account of its history.
A pastel de Belém is a small custard tart. It is the reason many visitors add a stop on Rua de Belém to the monuments. This page covers the practical side: the address, the hours and how to deal with the wait.

Opening hours
The bakery is open every day. The closing time depends on the season.

Takeaway or a table
The wait is usually different for the two.
Takeaway orders and seated service are handled separately, so the line outside is not always the line for a table. If you want to sit, ask the staff how to get a table before you join a long queue. There is no guaranteed shortcut, and no one can promise a short wait on a given day.
Prices, the number of seats and the rules on reservations change, so ask or look at the menu on the spot. Do not plan around a fixed waiting time.
How to plan the stop
Simple ways to cut the wait.
Go early
The bakery opens at 08:00 every day, which is before the monuments open. Waits cannot be promised at any hour, but an early start leaves the whole day for the rest of Belém.
Go late
In July, August and September the bakery stays open until 22:00. An evening visit after the monuments have closed is possible.
Mind the holidays
On 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January the bakery closes at 19:00.
Get there
Tram 15E stops at Mosteiro Jerónimos in the same quarter. Buses 714 and 728 serve the same area. The getting-there page explains the options.

|---|---|---|
| Pastéis de Belém | Every day | 08:00–21:00 (22:00 from 1 July to 30 September) |

The bakery is the one stop that works on a Monday, when the monastery and the Coach Museum are closed. A Monday in Belém is a good day for the Padrão, the river and a tart. Details are on the pages for the monastery, the Padrão and the Coach Museum.
