Jeronimos Monastery at a glance
The Jeronimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) stands in Belém, a short distance from the Torre de Belém. It was built for the Hieronymite order, and its church, Santa Maria de Belém, sits beside a two-storey cloister. Together with the tower it forms one UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 1983.
The key point for planning is that you can visit two different things here. The church is free. The cloister needs a ticket, which costs €18 for adults in 2026. They have separate opening hours, so check which one you want before you set the time.

Opening hours: cloister and church
The two parts run on different schedules. Prices and times are for 2026.
| Part | Days | Hours | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloister | Tuesday to Sunday | 09:30–17:30, last entry 17:00 | €18 adults |
| Church | Tuesday to Saturday | 10:30–17:00 | Free |
| Church | Sundays and religious holidays | 14:00–17:00 | Free |
The monastery is closed on Mondays. It is also closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December. State receptions can close it on other days without much notice, so check the day before you go. Access to the church can be limited when it is very crowded.

Tickets and booking →What to see
Four things that reward a slow visit.
The cloister
The two-storey cloister is the part you pay for. Walk the arcades on both levels. The upper level is the one that is not wheelchair accessible, so plan around that if anyone in your group uses a chair.
The church
Santa Maria de Belém is free and worth the time even if you skip the cloister. The church is also a place of remembrance: Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões are buried here. The tombs belong to the church, not to the cloister ticket.
The portals
The south portal is the work of João de Castilho, the west portal of Nicolau Chanterenne. Take a moment at each before you go inside.

The setting
Belém was the harbor from which the sea voyages of the age of discovery set out. Vasco da Gama's voyage of 1497 and Cabral's of 1500 are tied to this place. The monastery was begun at the start of the sixteenth century. Its foundation stone is dated 6 January 1501 or to 1502. For the longer story, see the history page.

Getting there
Tram 15E stops at Mosteiro Jerónimos. Buses 714 and 728 also serve the monastery. The Cascais line train runs between Cais do Sodré and Belém. Check the current timetable before you go. All options are explained on the getting-there page.
How to get to Belém →Church or cloister first
Because the church opens at 10:30 on weekdays and only at 14:00 on Sundays, a Sunday morning visit only works for the cloister. A Sunday afternoon gives you both.
Accessibility
The ground floor of the cloister and the church can be reached without steps. The upper cloister level cannot.
Combine with the neighbours
The Pastéis de Belém bakery is on Rua de Belém, and the tower and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos are in Belém too. For the monastery as part of a longer Lisbon trip, see the Lisbon guide to the Jerónimos Monastery.
